Garden of Alcazar, San Diego
Garden of Alcazar, San Diego
A famous castle located in Seville, Spain gave its name to this famous garden. Nearby is the Mingei Museum and the Art Institute.
Plants and flowers aren't the only thing the garden is famous for. A number of ornate fountains covered in yellow, green, and blue Moorish tiles can be found here. An enclosed garden surrounded by boxwood hedges is designed in a formal style. The designs are typical of classical gardening. The topiaries are beautiful here. Over 7000 annuals are planted in the area, bringing a cacophony of color throughout the year. In 1935, architect Richard Requa spent two years designing the overall scheme for the gardens, which were recreated in this project.
It is open all year round at the Alcazar Garden. Admission is free.
Why You Should Visit:
Small but gorgeous place. Among all the flowers, the Spanish tile and water features make an excellent backdrop for photos.
Tip:
A shady area of the garden offers benches for a breather between exploring the many attractions of Balboa Park.

Creating an ambiance that could fool you into forgetting you're still in the middle of a modern city, the idyllic setting draws inspiration from an earlier era. It is adorned with ornate Moorish-style fountains, turquoise tiles, and brightly blossoming flowers that are replanted throughout the year.
