History of the Preserve
The Penasquitos Canyon has been a destination for over 6,000 years! A prehistoric culture called La Jolla and Kumeyaay can still be found here. Our article will tell you all about the Kumeyaay Indians, the first people to inhabit San Diego.
Francs de Maria Ruiz received Rancho de los Penasquitos in 1815. Historically, this was California's first Mexican land grant. The Ruiz-Alvarado Adobe, which is still visible near where Los Penasquitos canyons meet Lopez canyons, was built by Ruiz.
Developed in the 1860s, the Johnson-Taylor Adobe was used by many owners to raise cattle. It still stands near Black Mountain Road today, thanks to Charles Mohnike, who constructed the Mohnike Adobe in 1910.
It was in 1970 that San Diego began the process of purchasing the land. To purchase the 3400 acres for open space, they started the Land Acquisition Report for Los Penasquitos Regional Park program. By 1982, the city of San Diego had become the main owner of the land, and it continues to be so today.
